City employees are not the only ones who have felt the cut in benefits. I understand there jobs (police/fire) are very dangerous and I appreciate every single one (except the ones that are crooked), but like you who are in the military, it is a job they signed up for. Everyone in America is having benefits cut that they were promised. It is a choice to stay where you are employed. If you dont like the cuts, then change jobs. My tax dollars pay their salary that they are receiving when they work or dont work. I do not get a cut in my taxes just because they decided to have the blue flu or red rash or whatever they are calling it, in fact, it causes additional money to be paid out (out of our tax dollars) to cover overtime. The fire department in itself has spent over $3 million dollars in the last five years on overtime from employees calling in. That is $3 million dollars of our tax money, not money they had to pay in to their retirement benefit fund! I myself feel as though the city benefits, retirees, etc. that are currently employed should keep what benefits they were promised when hired. Yes, I agree city council and the mayor should receive pay cuts. I have never understood why city council makes the money they make to begin with. The city employee benefit system needs to be reworked for any future employees hired. You who are calling in with your flu or rash are not doing anything other than putting the people who do pay your salary at risk. So, with this said, I am sure I will have people upset with me since I do have friends who are city employees and some have parents/grandparents who are city retirees. So, just as the man who was on TV and confronted the council (the one that told him to put his phone down) that stated what if your loved one was in a fire or needed the police and needed one of them, I say to you, as an employee in the healthcare, what if we chose to have a certain type of flu or rash, what if every healthcare provider decided to be sick due to the Obama healthcare reform and Medicare cuts and YOU needed a life saving surgery and there was no surgeon to help you, how would you feel?????
