Closing out Queens Blade release week with my final behind the scenes report. Part 4: Getting the strongest performances Over the three weeks of recording for this project, I was constantly looking for the best ways to get the best performances. Each actor brought their own techniques and while each had their own unique take on the process, all of them delivered amazing work. For a show that can often be funny or even outrageously silly, it does have its tender moments. It was a lot of fun and occasionally emotional as we worked together to find the right mood for each scene. Ill admit there were a few times where tears were shed on both sides of the glass. Every night, after we were done, I would review the days work and often have conversations with Clark about how things were coming along. There are a number of industry folk that say the best way for a director to have a complete vision of the show is to also have him adapt the scripts. But I daresay having the adaptor and director work as a synchronous unit, yet also have the ability to have two sets of eyes on it, was incredibly helpful. Sitting together and watching the “dailies” gave us the opportunity to say “man, that was great, but what if we pushed this a little more?” or “these are two amazing performances, but a slight tweek on our first actor would really put it over the top.” Keep in mind that since dubbing is almost always a solitary job, that the first actor in is often working with no cue from their co-star. Thankfully, since we had many of our core cast in the studio over several days, I was able to make little notes so that on future sessions I was able to say “man, I love this stuff, but I want to take our A game and make it A+”. And because we had such a talented and modest cast, they always agreed. No egos here, brother! In Closing I hope youve enjoyed my week of behind-the-scenes info as much as Ive enjoyed sharing it. People say a director is the person who brings the whole show together, but I honestly couldnt have done it without the hard work of the cast and crew, who all gave it 110%. I really hope that Ill be able to direct again soon as it was truly an amazing experience.
