Coffee with the ladies this morning was wonderful. Inspiring. Rejuvenating. A couple of the ladies and I were talking about having hardwood floor in the kitchen, which I do. They don’t. Anyway, a young man sitting close by said he used to lay hardwood floors. He and the gentleman who was sitting with him were both using beautiful hand carved walking sticks, that it turns out Dave (younger of the two) had chosen from limbs lying on the ground, smoothed and finished. This of course begged the question – why is a young man walking with a cane? Turns out they both had been injured during recent wars. The older gentleman, whose name I do not know, was shot and also involved in an IED explosion. He still has 47 pieces of shrapnel in him. He is also suffering from cancer and PTSD. Only 55 years old. I am not sure of Dave’s history. He is in his mid 40’s. Suffers from back pain and PTSD. He talked more about how he is trying to survive and some days even thrive. He puts his energy into figuring out how to help other veterans assimilate into society upon their return. Seems there is no real program in effect for that. Not anything that has the kind of follow through or even approaches from the right angle. Our conversation was so enlightening. We plan on meeting up at the coffee shop again next week. Dave and I exchanged e-mail info so we can keep in touch. The things we learned from them today left us wanting to know more. We asked them how we could help veterans. Dave and the other gentleman are compiling a list and he will e-mail it to me.
