Comedy Central goes for more UK sitcom and names UK exec Comedy Central has given the go ahead for a pilot for multi-camera sitcom Medics from Clerkenwell Films and is backing British writer Tom Edge, who is adapting US comedy script Operation Slut into a multi-camera sitcom. At the same time Comedy Central UK has appointed Mia Lane as head of development. Lane, who joins from Wall to Wall, will be responsible for sourcing and developing original commissions for Comedy Centrals international development team. The commissions are part of a push to build an international pipeline of original comedy and entertainment content that can air across Viacom International Media Networks international Comedy channels and complement local content offerings, being overseen by Jill Offman, managing director of Comedy Central UK and senior vice president, international content, Comedy Central. Medics is a laugh-out-loud sitcom that perfectly combines adolescent humor with fast-paced drama while Operation Slut is a hilarious satire of modern-day relationships, both of which sit perfectly within our channel portfolio, says Offman. London-based Clerkenwell Films, which produced superhero comedy drama Misfits, will shoot a studio pilot for Medics in December. Written by Mark Grimmer (The Midnight Beast) and directed by Dominic Brigstocke, Medics portrays second year medical student Simon Denham (Nick Hendrix) struggling to follow in the footsteps of his handsome and successful doctor father. The comedy follows the antics of Simon and his flatmates, Minge (Dan Ings), Millie (Jessie Cave), Caroline (Bekka Bowling) and Dangerous Dave (Kevin Loughlin), living and training together under the eye of the mercurial Professor Barber (Phil Davis). Medics will be executive produced by Lourdes Diaz, vice president of development and production, for Comedy Central and Murray Ferguson, Andy Baker and Ed Macdonald for Clerkenwell Films. Murray Ferguson, chief executive of Clerkenwell Films, said: Producing multi-camera sitcom represents another important step forward for us in the expansion and diversification of our comedy and drama output. An agreement has also been signed with writer Tom Edge (Pramface, Threesome, The Midnight Beast) to adapt the US script of Operation Slut, originally written by Taii K. Austin (Underemployed, Nurse Jackie, Scrubs, Ugly Betty), into a multi-camera sitcom for international broadcast. The show centres around Ivy, a cute 30-year-old, neurotic do-gooder who is focused on getting married. However, when the proposal finally comes, she finds she is not ready to settle down and with the support of her three best friends embarks on Operation Slut, her mission to enjoy a variety of men but with no attachments or heartbreak. Diaz is the executive producer. Comedy Central has recently given the go-ahead to further original content for its international network, with pilots having been filmed for another multi-camera sitcom, Mummys Boys, and a non-scripted entertainment format entitled The Almost Impossible Gameshow. Mia Lane will report directly to Lourdes Diaz and the Comedy Central international development team. Lane will work with writers, directors, agents and comedic talent to generate content for Comedy Central channels around the world. Lane was formerly senior entertainment development producer at Wall to Wall. Prior to this, she worked for a number of independent producers and broadcasters, including Gogglebox Entertainment, ITV Studios and Endemol, developing numerous popular shows, such as The Million Pound Drop, Surprise Surprise, Pointless and Supersize vs Superskinny.
