Competency Area Manager Light Metals Pretoria, Rk pa neg. Our client in the Materials Science and Manufacturing (MSM) industry has a vacancy for a Competence Area Manager (CAM) in its Light Metals group which focuses on developing and implementing technologies in two technology platforms, namely Titanium and Aluminium. The Titanium technology platform forms the hub of the national Titanium Centre of Competence (TiCoC), which has the mission to develop the technology building blocks needed to establish a new South African titanium metal industry. The Aluminium technology platform forms the other part of the national Light Metals Development Network (LMDN) and is aimed at technology support for the existing South African aluminium Industry to improve its global competitiveness. You will form part of the group’s management team and report directly to the Executive Director. As this is a senior management position, we seek an inspirational leader with a record of accomplishment in leadership of research and development (R&D) and/or technology development, who will set the vision and direction for the group, enthuse both internal and external stakeholders and grow its capabilities. You will be required to further grow this internationally renowned, sustainable group comprising a cohesive and inter-related suite of research groups aligned to serve the needs of the above-mentioned national programmes and contribute towards fulfilment of the group’s mandate. The specific groups of this area are Primary Processes, Powder Metallurgy Technologies, Advanced Casting Technologies and Research Implementation. Qualifications, skills and experience: • A relevant PhD degree in materials science, metallurgical engineering, pro-metallurgy or physics. • Strong publication record in relevant science and engineering journals. • Registration as Professional Scientist or Engineer will be a strong recommendation. • Five to ten years proven experience of R&D and/or technology management. • Understanding of financial, human resources and business mechanisms and processes. • Appropriate national and international scientific engagement among peers. • Excellent people- management skills and ability to lead project teams. • Excellent communication; presentation and report-writing skills. • Ability to mentor and coach others. • Strongly customer focused. • Sufficient insight into the science and technology of Light Metals to provide guidance on research direction. Key responsibilities: Leadership • Contribute to the review and further development of the TiCoC and LMDN strategies. • Contribute to the research strategy of the group (MSM) in conjunction with the science, engineering and technology (SET) leadership. • Provide and coordinate the strategic leadership within the group, and provide strategic inputs at MSM level. • Develop implementation strategies for the group which are aligned with the strategies of the TiCoC and LMDN. • Motivate and lead the group and its research groups to deliver in terms of the objectives of the national titanium and aluminium research strategies. • Operate as member of the MSM management team and accept management team responsibilities and accountability. Management • Ensure staff development and strategic human capital development to advance individual researchers in their research careers. • Ensure demographic transformation of the group. • Ensure effective communication and motivation of staff. • Ensure implementation of quality initiatives and maintenance of quality management systems complying with the ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 standards. Business • In line with the MSM strategy, and in conjunction with the MSM Leadership Team, draw up and implement a Light Metals business plan, which is integrated in the MSM business plan for operation, sustainable growth and robustness of the group and ensure that the group remains a national leader in its field, with international recognition. • Maintain strategic and business relationships with the stakeholders and clients of Light Metals. • Develop new market opportunities and forge partnerships locally and abroad in support of sustaining the business of the group. • Implement and comply with applicable company financial and business systems. • Ensure the financial sustainability of Light Metals. Research and Research Investment • Contribute to the MSM research strategy development and implement relevant components of the research strategy. • Set strategic investment goals and develop a sustainable research strategy for the group. • Propose, plan and lead the implementation of externally funded, Parliamentary Grant-funded and other grant-funded projects. • Ensure the development of high-quality SET expertise, appropriate capacity and profiles. • Ensure SET outputs (SET productivity) and quality. • Establish and maintain strategic research alliances in support of the Light Metals R&D strategy in collaboration with the SET leadership.
