Congratulatory message to Aliyu and Aliyu: Another Perspective Let mi share with my friends(Aliyu and Aliyu) what my supervisor told mi when I finished defending my thesis-based research....what a chain message! The message was told to my supervisor (Dr S.B Adamu) by his External examiner when he finished defending his Ph.D. Thesis. The message is, Aliyu and Aliyu, you have indeed defend(ed) your thesis which transpired between you and your external examiners. But this is what is called primary defence. As you step-out of the hall or office where you defend(ed) your research, your secondary or more appropriately, tertiary defence begins. From now-on, Your walk, your appearance, your views, your thought, your words, your action and inaction, your interaction and reservation, your speech as well your silence, your support as well your indifference Must be Master-holder defined and addressed. Lest I forget, I will remind you what our mentor (Late Dr Waziri Junaidu) told the assembly of Profs and Ph.Ds at the dawn of building the only surviving National Ivory tower of Nigeria in the cold morning of August 1971 during one and the most historical ABU convocation.... Ladies and gentlemen, the holy Quran says: Allah shall raise in his favour those who believe and those who are given knowledge. And the Prophet, peace be upon him, was reported to have said that: The ink of the scholar is holier than the blood of the matyr. Knowledge is, therefore, an advantage. It is also a responsibility. If the Scholar isolates himself from society, he will have betrayed science and failed to carry out his duty to the Nation. I say to you Aliyu and Aliyu Let not your degree(s), researches and publications be an excuse to feel haughty amongst your own people. Always remember that knowledge is at its best when it is universally useful and that the best scholar is the one whom ordinary man fears neither to encounter nor to address. Forever Your friend Adamu Tilde.
