Construction on the current Main Building began May shortly after a fire destroyed the original in April. Hundreds of laborers descended on campus and construction worked at a fast pace. More than 4,300,000 bricks, mostly made from the marl in the lakes were laid by September when the core of the Main Building reopened for the school year. The Main Building stands 187 feet tall. The Golden Dome that caps the Main Building was a gift from the sisters of adjacent Saint Marys College, Notre Dames sister school.
