Continuing with our Then and Now series, we move on to the laboratory, where we count and identify red tide organisms. The main difference between early sampling years and now is that now we preserve most of our samples before we count them. Before 1990, all samples were counted when the organisms in the water samples were free swimming – this made it very difficult to count and identify each individual species. Now, water samples are treated with iodide to preserve them– non-moving critters makes counting MUCH easier!
