Cool Lifestyle Writer Growing up in a small town, one will think that you need to follow the lights and trek to the capital in order to pursue a successful music career. Unfortunately, such a mentality is usually the blow that crushes the dreams of upcoming musicians. Luckily for people like Alexander Junior Chidhuza, affectionately known as Bowse, the knowledge that one has to make it big where he comes from first, has laid a strong foundation for him. He has shown that he understands the importance of making the best out of what he has and eventually elevating to greater heights when the right time comes. The young teen has made a name for himself in his community through making great music. Born Alexander Chidhuza, a second born in a family of two, Bowse credits his musical success to the love of his town. His debut track came about when he was doing Form Two in 2010. “The first track entitled “I’m In The Hood” was about my neighbourhood Katanga in Norton. “I am proud of where I come from, after all the town is home to one of the greatest legends to ever live in Zimbabwe — Oliver Mtukudzi. Because of that I believe that great things can still come out of it,” he said. The teen artiste explained to Cool Lifestyle that music writing comes naturally to him. He pointed out that what it takes is for him to listen to a beat, and then he feels a breeze and words begin to flow. Another interesting fact about Chidhuza is that despite coming from a town where dancehall music seems to be dominant, he has a totally different preference. “It is a bit of a challenge that most people in my town are Rastafarians and enjoy dancehall and reggae but I am a hip-hop person. “At first it was difficult for people to appreciate this but I make so much effort in making quality hip-hop music that can be appreciated,” he said. It was not difficult to notice this from the song that he did, a remix of “I’m In The Hood”. The song was his own version of US-based hip-hop guru Lil Wayne’s “We Be Steady Mobbin”. The 17-year-old displays a great deal of brilliance in his version of the song as he makes it relevant to ordinary youths “keeping it real in the hood”, as he puts it across. Commenting on balancing music and books, the Form Four pupil said it was all about integrity. “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. I do music during my free time,” he said. “At the moment I am focusing on my school work but most of my music stuff is done during weekends. “That is the reason why I have been releasing singles. Working on albums takes more time and that is something I do not have until I finish my O’Levels this year. “I plan to study music because I love it and have the full support of my mother,” he said.
