Croatan National Forest to Conduct Prescribed Burn this Weekend NEW BERN, N.C. -- The U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct a 1,000-acre prescribed burn in the next few days in the Croatan National Forest, weather permitting. The burn will take place off of Bender Road, approximately 12 miles northwest of the ranger station and approximately 10 miles south-southwest of New Bern. The prescribed fire will reduce the amount of fuel on the forest floor and reduce the chances of catastrophic wildfires. This helps to protect the surrounding community. The burn will also improve habitat for fire-adapted species such as red-cockaded woodpecker and restore the longleaf pine ecosystem. No roads or trails will be closed. The public should beware of smoke and fire engines in the area. A helicopter will be used to help ignite and control the fire. The National Weather Service will assist with the operation. Human safety is the highest priority and all necessary precautions will be taken.
