DID YOU KNOW: Because Greeley is currently lacking in the snow department (much to my dismay) I figured we could all use a little cheering up about this not-so-white Christmas coming up. Enjoy. :) 1) The largest snowflakes ever recorded were in Fort Keogh, Montana in January of 1887. The Guinness Book of World Records states the largest flake was 15 inches (38 cm) in diameter. 2) Snowflakes are not white. They are clear, but the many crystal faces make them appear white in color. 3) Nearly all snow that falls in flake form contains flakes that have six arms or points. 4) Most snowflakes are not perfectly symmetrical. 5) The worlds tallest ever snowman made measured a massive 34.63 metres and was made by the people of Bethel, Maine, USA. It took 2 weeks to build, finally being completed on 17 February 1999. The snowman, nicknamed Angus was so big that he had vehicle tyres for his mouth and trees for arms. 6) 76” in 24 Hours: The most snow ever recorded in a 24 hour period in the USA occurred at Silver Lake, Colorado in 1921 and was 76 inches of snow. (#2 = 63 inches was registered in Georgetown, Colorado on December 4, 1913) 7) 80% of all the freshwater on earth is frozen as ice or snow. This accounts for 12% of the earth’s surface. 8) No snowflake is ever the same pattern. 9) Snowflakes can be categorized into six main types, plate (flat), column, stars, dendrite, lacy, needle, and capped column. There are 35 main snowflakes which you could recognise from just looking. 10) The shape of snowflakes is determined by the altitude and temperatures at which they are formed. When several crystals stick together or create puffy white balls, they become snowflakes. Once the snowflakes are heavy enough, they fall to the earth. The average snowflakes fall at an average speed of 3.1 miles per hour.
