DO I NEED A BUSINESS DEGREE TO START MY OWN BUSINESS-? Senior Consultant,Professional Speaker and Business Advisor Ryan Kwati answers the above question- There is no way to sugar-coat it: Starting a business is a risk. There are real downsides to being an entrepreneur. Some are preventable and some are not,but I can tell you that the rewards for determined entrepreneurs far outweigh the risks of failure. I say this because often times I talk to people who say they have a great idea for a business. And then, in the next sentence, they tell me all the reasons why they can’t start a business or why it’s not the right time. I think a lot of it boils down to the fear of failure, which is very real and is a tough obstacle to overcome. But there are also many myths surrounding entrepreneurism and starting a business that I think add to the fear unnecessarily and reflect a lack of understanding- I’m in no way trying to discourage people from pursuing education. It can be a valuable tool that allows you to focus on the right things when undertaking a new venture. But I will tell you that I don’t have an MBA, and I’m in good company: Marc Cuban, Sir Richard Branson, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, Frank Lloyd Wright – none of them obtained business degrees. Most of them either didn’t attend or didn’t finish college and Frank Lloyd Wright dropped out of high school- Now clearly the entrepreneurs and innovators I listed above are not the norm, but we have established that it’s possible to be successful without advanced education. It’s also important to understand what having an advanced degree doesn’t give you: it doesn’t give you any guarantee that your business will be successful- So what do you need to be successful? First and foremost you should have an understanding of the industry you are getting into. In my experience, it’s hard to know where the best opportunities lie if you don’t know the ins and outs of an industry.
