DO YOU NEED A SECOND CHANCE TODAY? “That day turned out to be the WORST DAY of my life. It was ALSO the BEST DAY! I’d taken my old friend Mac duck hunting, along with his dog Booga. We shoved off at 5a on that dark, cold December morning. About a mile off shore we were hit with a freak storm ... a Nor’ Wester. The waves came up and tossed our little boat like a toy. In minutes the boat flipped ... then SANK! [OPTION - Watch SQuire tell this story: hulu/watch/373340#i4,p4,d2 ] By standing on the sunken boat, and holding onto a pole I’d jammed in the mud, we could JUST keep our heads above water. Mac was not in good health. I had to keep propping him up. And Booga was swimming in circles. When he got tired, I’d hold him by the collar for a few minutes. Then, finally, I said, “Mac ... I can save you, but I can’t save your dog.” So I shouted ... “Git Booga ... Git.” He swam away. And I knew there was no way he’d make it back to shore. The OPTIONS were BAD. Real bad. It was too far for me to swim for help ... and I couldn’t leave Mac alone. Our ONLY HOPE was for a BOAT to come along and rescue us. But, in the dark ... in the fog ... I couldn’t imagine anyone finding us out there. And, I SURE DIDN’T BELIEVE IN MIRACLES. When my sister tried to talk to me about God I kicked her outta the house ... calling her a fruitcake ... and worse. I could see that Mac was getting weaker and weaker. I kept shouting, “Hold on Mac ... we have to BELIEVE somebody’ll see us out here.” Of course, in my mind, I’m thinking ... WHAT CAN WE POSSIBLY DO? If we don’t get help ...we’re going to die. So, outta desperation ... I screamed ... If you’re there God ... PLEASE ... PLEASE GIVE ME A SECOND CHANCE. I looked at Mac... the cold was getting to him. He was fading fast. And then ... I saw something IN THE MIST. It looked like A CROSS. But it wasn’t. It was the mast of a big boat! I took my shirt off, stuck it on the pole, and waved it around ... hoping and hoping ... someone would see us. THEY DID! Next thing I knew ... someone was swimming toward us. Then a man dragged Mac back to the big boat. As I swam alongside I was AMAZED ... I couldn’t believe we were REALLY being rescued! THEN ... I saw the biggest GODWINK of my life. I saw the NAME ON THE BOAT. It was ... SECOND CHANCE! What do you know? Mac and I both got a second chance. And when we got to shore ... who was there to greet us ... but BOOGA! He got a second chance too! Now you know why the WORST DAY of my life ... was also ... MY BEST DAY.” Gerry Ponson Where is Gerry today? He works for Celebration Church near New Orleans.
