Dad and I every year would clear off a place in the garden that had played out and plant a bed of greens for the Fall. Dad worked hard in the garden and made sure I did too. Mama and Nana were always too busy so it was my job to help Dad in the garden. He taught me a lot about growing my own food which has profited me much over the years. We like most Southerners loved our greens, especially when cooked with a bit of ham hock or smoked jowl, so it was an important Fall crop which produced well most of the winter if properly attended too. Our winters are fairly mild most of the time her in Alabama so we most always had us a good mess of greens growing. Each year dad would take me to the hardware store that sold seed and we would make a mix of the seeds to plant in our greens bed. We liked mixing turnip, kale, mustard, spinach, radish, rape, and beet. He called it his super 7 green mix and it was really good and with the turnip, radish and beet there was a good root vegetable bonus later on down the road. Im thinking about having me a little patch of greens this fall...sounds might good to me.
