Daily Manna Wednesday 24, July 2013 TOPIC: Beyond Names, and Titles. TEXT: MICAH 2:7-13 KEY VERSE: “O thou that art named the house of Jacob, is the spirit of the LORD straitened? are these his doings? do not my words do good to him that walketh uprightly ?”(Micah 2:7). We often hear people ask, “What is in a name?” So much is in a name. That is why corporate organizations spend fortunes to popularise and maintain their names and product brands. A good name creates goodwill and opportunities. God’s word declares that, “a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold” (Proverbs 22:1). However, a name derives its appeal from the character of the person/ thing bearing it. That is why, till date, there are many Abels and hardly any Cain. Similarly, “the house of Jacob” is a beautiful name that evokes the blessed memories of God’s gracious dealings and covenant with Jacob, the ancestor of the Jews. At the time of Prophet Micah, the Jews had descended into the sins of covetousness and oppression, fraudulence and violence. They were well disposed to false prophets that prophesied false security to them. Yet, they prided themselves on the name, “the house of Jacob” even though they retained not the spirit thereof. They were the seed of Jacob in name and not in truth because they walked contrary to the covenant of truth given to Jacob. Consequently, the Lord threatened them with judgment. Today, there is a growing number of people that have a form of godliness but denying the power thereof. They bear the name of Christ or the name of a respectable church or Christian fellowship. Yet, in lifestyle and character, there is no trace of God’s grace working in them. There is no amount of name- dropping that can make up for lack of personal holiness in one’s life. Nor does a title matter to God if it is not backed by piety and sincere service to the Lord. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: No name is important if it is not registered in the Book of life.
