Dan Packard was a great boss, excellent editor and ally when I was a young news reporter right out of college. I learned so much from Dan, benefitting from his fine-tuned BS meter and instinct for whats interesting. My favorite thing about working for Dan was that he only called me by my last name. He liked to tell me (now more than 20 years ago) about the good old days (which now seem ancient) when real news men knew how to read hot lead on the press upside down and backwards. I’ll never forget how mad he got on my behalf once. I’m sure it resonated with me because for the most part, Dan’s writing showed more emotion than he ever did in the workplace. (Im surprised hes smiling in this picture.) He had a great salty sense of humor, nothing fazed him, and I always considered it a true win when I got him to chuckle. We also had a favorite refrain for the constant picture-no-shows for our weekly column featuring local residents: “Good neighbors -- you just can’t trust them.”
