Dance hall star, Winky D has been drawn into a huge nepotism scandal after it emerged that he had been elected to perform at Big Brother Africa, again! Winky D who has seen his music deteriorate in quality, as well as quantity is not even Zimbabwe’s hottest artist anymore, and has not been since 2012, a good two years ago. Winky D’s fan base has also been hugely shaded, with the rise of Killer T and co. Popular producer and respected music guru Anonzi Xndr Mutumah took to social media to present his disgruntlement! Xndr, as he is affectionately known made it clear that he likes Winky D, but his selection was dubious at best, and nepotism personified. Zim Hip Hop has been the fastet growing genre in the country, and Xndr is justified in his claims. Fellow artists were also quick to note that Winky D could not represent ZImbabwe twice in a row, as if Zimbabwe does not have better artists. Extracts taken from Marc Miz below So Big Brother Africa zimbabwe representatives elect Winky D to perform for the SECOND TIME in the house { i haven’t seen DAVIDO’s performance twice or KHULI CHANA’s } and the questions arise here: Aren’t they other artists capable of getting such a slot to showcase their music to the continent when there is so much abundant talent playing on radio and furthermore, their work can draw an international audience from such a platform?. If its about hype to select an artist not based on originality of their work i guess a hip hop group like MMT would have been suitable for such a event as they have been raising the bar high not on a Hip Hop level but as Zim Music industry on a internationally scale? And going back to originality which i would like to stress dealing with such platforms, they are female ethnic vocalists like Shingie Mangoma who blend african sounds and melodies to come up with such a unique zimbabwe feel to songs that if you are a foreigner listening to her,you will most definitely purchase her album on iTunes but we decide to send Winky D a carbon copy of Vibez kartel? Now you know why Zim still struggling to go international as an industry collectively in such a year like 2014 of digital marketing because those kind of opportunities are given to the wrong people.
