Dangers of the prosperity gospel - Rev 3:14-19 - The Laodicean church can to a large extent be compared to the contemporary church today. Because of their prosperity, they thought they were fine when in fact they were terribly miserable. - What are the dangers of emphasizing prosperity in the church? 1. It shifts our focus from eternal things to material things o Vs. 17- You say, “I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing! 2. It makes us mediocre Christians o Vs.16 But since you are like lukewarm water, I will spit you out of my mouth 3. It renders us spiritually impoverished! o Vs.17b – And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked 4. It promotes selfishness rather than selflessness o Vs. 17b - I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing! 5. It makes us apathetic and indifferent to the lost o Vs.19b – Be diligent and turn from your indifference How about heeding to the master’s advice? o Vs.18 – “I advise you to buy gold from me – gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich”
