Danube Delta, Romania - largely untouched, it is one of the largest nature reserves in Europe The Delta of the River Danube is the second largest river delta in Europe, and remains largely untouched and un-diverted. It forms one of the most vast nature reserves on the continent. There are several freshwater lakes which are all interconnected, and the interconnecting channels and vegetation form the largest continuous marshland in Europe, home to the longest stretch of reedbeds in the world with over one thousand seven hundred square kilometres of reeds. Three hundred bird species live in the Delta, a hundred and seventy six of which nest in the area. There are also forty five species of freshwater fish, and native otter and weasel populations. The reed stretches are so vast that a dominant feature of the Delta are islands formed of decaying clusters of reed, some of which are static but many of which are floating. These make excellent perches for the birdlife, whether as a temporary resting place, or somewhere to launch a fishing expedition from. Higher ground is home to trees such as alder, oak, poplar and willow, and intermediate, sandy areas feature feather grass and other types. There are altogether twelve types of habitat within the Delta alone: Wet meadows, dry meadows, human settlements, steep banks, sandy and rocky areas, forests, flooded reeds, riverine forest, aquatic, plaur, sandy and muddy beaches, and flooded islets.
