Dare to Bare: The Naked Truth Less is more. For Bench’s underwear show called, “The Naked Truth”, it is the motto to live by. “Our last show was hard to top, being massive and grand, and so we thought of changing the direction. This show is going back to the basics, to the naked, bare bones of an underwear show.” Says Ben Chan when asked about the concept for this year. With all the black and white billboards of the hottest Benchsetters plastered over the metro, there is no denying that the shift to this new “raw” concept means that there’ll be more skin than meets the eye on Sept 19. Full force on social media, everyone seems to want a ticket to the hottest show in September. Rules are simple enough, all you need is a minimum purchase from selected Bench, Herbench, Bench Body, and Superbench store in Metro Manila and selected stores in Cebu and Davao, your seat will depend on the amount purchased; the brackets are: (for cash, EOS, and non-Bench Mastercard holders) (1) every P600 single receipt purchase equals one General Admission invite, (2) every P1200 single receipt purchase equals one Upper Box invite, and (3) every P2500 single receipt purchase equals one Lower Box invite. Although for Bench Mastercard holders, the purchase requirement is less: (1) every P500 single receipt purchase equals one General Admission invite, (2) every P1000 single receipt purchase equals Upper Box invite, while (3) every P2300 single receipt purchase equals one Lower Box invite. Small prices to pay to see 45 of the country’s hottest stars and 13 international models who flown in just for the show will strut in world-class underwear, namely: Brad Alphonso, Christian Williams, Dmitry Dmitrievich Brylev, Hugo Horace Mayhew, Jack Benjamin O Hara, Kevin Hubsmith, Laurin Krausz, Louie Joseph Mayhew, Renzo Robert Rometo, Samuel George Worth, Devon Spence, Alesander Remih Gurevnin, and last, but certainly not the least, international Benchsetter and It boy on the runway, Juan Paulo Roldan. Expect to see these sultry male models strut their assets, and bring to the plate international runway flair similar to shows in Paris, London and Milan. This year’s underwear show is also the platform for 6 new Benchsetters to make their debut. America’s Next Top Model Allison Harvard will be joined by hot new hunks Arnold Van Opstal, Martin Del Rosario, Markki Stroem, Dominic Roque, Tom Rodriguez and Dennis Trillo. The boys will take the stage as Bench’s new bods to behold; each of them confessing that it will worth everyone’s ticket to see how hard they’ve worked to trim down and get those desirable cuts down their abs, arms, and back. Not to mention the risqué underwear they’ll be sporting down the runway would make any girl squeal from miles away. These boys have also come from fairly conservative images, and have not been this outspoken with their bodies before. But baring it all for Bench is worth it. Shot by Mark Nicdao, their black and white portraits to be flashed on screens and monitors, showcase their bold statuesque figures that are enough to tease but leaving enough for one’s imagination to do it’s work. Still unconvinced? “Naked Truth is a multi-disciplinary show, by a new assembly of creatives from different parts of the world specializing in lighting, video, performance, and scene technology.” Noel Manapat, stylist for The Naked Truth, says regarding the magnitude of Bench’s 9th underwear show to date. The creative process involved the collaboration between Noel, Ben Chan, fashion director Robby Carmona, production designer Gino Gonzalez, and international production and creative geniuses compromising of creative director Gypsy Snider (worked on the Tony award-winning revival of Pippin) and lighting director Nol Van Genutchten (worked on Cirque de Soleil’s Varekai), and multimedia house Geodezik, who has done video scenographies for the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Madonna. “I started building the creative team February this year, by asking people whose works I’ve seen on Broadway, in concerts, and on video from around the world. As of now, our team is comprised of creatives from New York, Montreal, Amsterdam, Manila. Skype has been our virtual office. Our first physical meeting was in New York to finalize the concept less than two months before the show.” Ben Chan shares how he was able to put up this underwear show mainly through digital correspondence. Other than the theatrics and production feats, Bench has also raised the bar at an international level in terms of model casting. Noel Manapat notes that select models from top agencies DNA and Wilhelmina will be flown in from L.A., New York, London, Slovenia and Zurich. Gino Gonzales also mentions how the stage is a 360 degrees playground; that the approach for each segment would be experimental, guerilla, and will incorporate elements similar to a circus setting. With over 100 models to be manned and directed during the show, fashion director Robby Carmona says that that in itself puts The Naked Truth on a global scale.
