Dave Klingler and I have been having an excellent discussion on jobs and education. His most recent post was a response to my post to some of the strange things I see in job postings. I would like to point out that I was being a little satirical, however, Dave brings up an excellent point that I would like to expound upon. In my post I mentioned a job posting asking for multiple technology talents and the ability to play guitar, accomplished guitarist it actually read. Dave points out that this would be because the person would be working with people who are interested in guitars or music, and it would be good to understand them. This is a point I have tried to make many times with many people, especially my children, co-workers, and fellow students. Your degree is important, your specific talents are important, and your ability to carry out those skills is important. All those things will make or break you. However, your ability to relate will also be a catalyst in your success. This is part of the reason why schools require electives, is to help you prepare to relate to people outside your world of expertise. For instance, I write software, build web sites, and provide very specific web solutions for businesses. Mind you, we are beyond a simple web design, we are talking about functionality. John Stoneback can attest to this and to the fact that the ability to communicate is the key to success, as Dave points out. If I dont understand YOUR department, YOUR business, or YOUR needs, then WE get nowhere. It does not mean I need to be an expert in your field, but it does mean I need to take a big enough interest to be able to relate, communicate, understand, and provide you with a solution that makes sense to you, or in the case of the music store, gets their customers excited. To Dave, I understood what they were asking for, I was just trying to share some things I found a little bizarre. I figured they would want someone with music talent and interest, but the specifics of an accomplished guitarist caught me off guard. I want to thank you for providing us with some of the best business/employee insights I have read in a long time.
