David Parsons of Springfield Illinois, Past District Governor of District 6460, says, “Attracting the younger generation is going to mean two things — getting longtime members to embrace new ways of doing things and refocusing the traditional approach.” “Today’s up-and-coming generation,” he says, “is in-terested in service, not just sitting at a meal and chit-chatting socially. They want to be actually doing something, getting involved.” These younger members have seen the economy go into a recession and watched the dot-com bubble burst. They realize that their employers are less likely to pay for their Rotary membership dues. They are working hard to support their family and work-related expenses and are aware that Rotary adds to this cost. They realize that they cannot attend every week and are concerned how this will set with the older club members. Even if Rotary International tells them that they are only required to show up 50% of the time, they sense that the older members do not agree with this. These younger members are interested in the weekly program and learning, more than the opportunity to gain fellowship. For the young member, the term fellowship has an old ring to it and it appears to them to mean something that the older members need.
