Davie Street, Vancouver. Darryls is a truly unique business. As far as I am aware, it is the only store that has a Cigar Store White Man (named General Custer) standing at the front door. Turnaround, as they say, is fair play. Darryl (pictured) has regular customers who are without exception real characters, the atmosphere is welcoming, the humour is fast and furious, and this little shop serves excellent wild salmon salad on bannock every Friday. Sadly, this wonderful place is suffering as many small businesses do, and despite his near-legendary status among all who encounter it, Darryls will most likely have to close. I first stumbled upon this shop a number of years ago working as a letter carrier all over Vancouvers West End. When I chose a permanent walk in the area, I found myself becoming part of a little community. After I retired, I introduced Cylia to Darryls--we try to go for a salmon-on-bannock at least once a month.
