Day 10: Today Im grateful for my oldest brother Wade. Wade is the eldest of 4 children so he got the privilege of being the first grandchild born on both paternal and maternal grandparents sides. Since he was the first, he got to experience all the firsts that any child does; all the learning to discipline, learning to share, learning what he could and couldnt get away with. Until I was 7 years old, we lived in the country and since we didnt have a TV, we learned to make our own fun like building caves from card tables and chairs with blankets draped over them, riding bicycles or horses, playing rodeo on our Shetland pony named Dude (if more than one person was on him, he would buck like there was no tomorrow), playing with our dogs, played circus on the swing set... we thought of all sorts of things to do. Wade was always our protector as we played outside making sure we didnt run onto a snake or anything. He was somewhat bossy (but dont tell him I said so) but today I understand why because he was in charge. Wade played baritone in the band and marched with the Golden Wolf Band during football games, acted in theater and has always loved life and people in general. He has always has a heart as big as Texas and if he thought there might be something you wanted of his, he would give it to you. Wade, LuAnn and I used to sing as a trio in church and he still has a beautiful voice! When he was 28 years old and living in Seattle, he began dropping things and after testing, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. My parents flew to be with him and LuAnn and I drove their car to Seattle so they would have a car while they were there since no one knew how long they would need to be there. Wades surgery lasted 13 hours and every hour, someone would come out to tell us he was doing well or whatever the circumstances were. About half-way through the surgery, they came out to tell us that the tumor (glioblastoma) had wrapped itself around Wades brain stem and that the doctor was going to stop the surgery and complete it on another day because he was exhausted. Family was called and began praying and the next report was the doctor got his second wind and is going to continue with the surgery. The surgery ended up being a 13-hour surgery and while in surgery, Wade suffered a stroke that paralyzed his left side. He was such a trooper and went through several weeks/months of rehab to regain the use of his left side. In working in the healthcare field, I have seen so many people who have gone through what Wade has gone through who become bitter. Wade has never become bitter although I wouldnt have blamed him at times, and he always seems to have a sweet spirit and be grateful for what he does have. As I have said for a long time: Wade, you are my hero!! You amaze and inspire me on a daily basis. I love you!!
