Day 3: Recycling! The old light bulbs, along with the no longer needed adapters, are being recycled, as appropriate. The recycling effort is supported by the Municipality of Thessaloniki. At the same time, the Consulate encourages the employees to recycle their burned light bulbs from home with the Municipality program. Some Facts on the Greening Diplomacy Initiative: In 2011, U.S. Embassy Athens installed solar panels, across the top deck of the Embassy’s garage which are capable of generating approximately 135.000kWh of green electricity per year. On days of peak production, that represents up to 70 percent of the electricity consumed in the Embassy’s annex and adjoining buildings. The panels also shield vehicles from the sun. “This is a great initiative that exemplifies the United States’ commitment to renewable energy and to pursing green solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of the Embassy,” said former Ambassador Smith when the project was completed in 2011. athens.usembassy.gov/pr-2011-18.html
