Day 38. Typically, there is something of interest that stands out in my reading. Today, not so much, but I will make a comment (actually it will sound preachy). Many Nephites converted over to the wicked Gadianton society. So much so that they prepared to conquer the righteous Nephites in Zarahemla. Under the direction of their prophet, Gidgiddoni, the righteous Nephites left their cities to together in one area. They brought with them enough provisions to last them for 7 years. Their enemies had not prepared provisions nor did they find much to live off of in the wilderness around the land that the Nephites stationed themselves. For 2-3 years they surrounded the righteous Nephites waiting for them to weaken. Obviously, they didn’t. When the righteous Nephites were attacked, they were able to defeat the Gadianton warriors, who were in a weakened state. Then they were able to return to their homes with provisions to spare to make life comfortable. I would liken this to the Savior’s parable of the 10 virgins. Elder Bednar, one of the 12 apostle spoke of that parable during conference of last year. He compared the lamps as testimony and oil as conversion. ““While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps [of testimony]. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil [even the oil of conversion]; for our lamps [of testimony are weak and] are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves” (Matthew 25:4–9). As Nephites had plenty of provisions to sustain themselves for a long time, we need to continue to strength our conversion. Eventually the Nephites were attacked. For each of us, the day will come when we will pass through difficult trials or circumstances and the strength of our conversion or the measure of our oil, will be the determining factor of whether we make it through or not.
