Day 925. Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE THOMAS ALFRED GRASSAM 25058. Born in July 1880, Thomas was the third of ten children to Alfred and Sarah Grassam of 15 Waverley Street, Hull. A Printer by trade he married Ethel Smith in 1907 and the couple lived at 73 Bannister Street, Withernsea. He joined the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment and was killed in action on 12th April 1918 as the Pals were sent up to plug a gap in the line during the worst days of the German Spring Offensive. Like so many who died that day, Thomas simply marched off into oblivion disappearing over the horizon never to be seen again. His name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial; he was 37 years old.
