Day Five Wrap. The fifth and final day of the 2013 World Rowing - TopicsExpress

Day Five Wrap. The fifth and final day of the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Champs saw NSW rowers competing in 2 B-finals and 2 A-finals. With the temperature again heating up early, officials eschewed the usual lunch break between the B and A-finals, which meant results were coming in fast. Our first competitors were Hamish Playfair and Peter Koster in the men’s quad B-final. Surprised in their semi-final by the speed off the start, the Australians were hoping to get themselves into a better position in the first quarter. With barely half a second separating all 6 crews at the 500m mark, the Aussies push through half the field over the rest of the race, eventually finishing in 3rd place. Soon after, we had the men’s eight B-final on the course. After a slightly slow start, the Australian crew started moving slowly towards the rest of the field through the middle of the race. However, they didn’t leave themselves quite enough time, finishing 4th; 2 tenths of a second behind the Italians. Georgia Miansarow, competing in the lightweight women’s double, was NSW’s first A-final of the night. Racing in one of the toughest events of the whole regatta, the Australians were in the hunt for the entire race. Less than 3 seconds separated the top 5 crews coming into the final 500m, with a fast sprint needed by the entire field to assure themselves of a place on the podium. Unfortunately the Aussies just couldn’t quite keep up with the top 4, finishing in 5th place. The women’s eight has become the USA’s pet event, having won the race more than any other country. The Australian crew, featuring NSW’s Georgie Gotch, were looking to make a change to this tradition, but no one was going to touch the Americans this year. Australia fought hard through the middle of the race, in 3rd place at halfway, but couldn’t keep up with the German push over the final quarter. They crossed the line in a very competitive 4th place. That’s our final daily wrap-up for this year’s under 23 World Champs! We hope you’ve enjoyed our daily coverage of the regatta.
