Dear Colleagues, Below is another publishing opportunity addressing Democracy & Black and Latino men in the Journal of Public Affairs Education. Please email me directly using my email address contained in the CFP should you have questions or are interested. Cheers, Richard Greggory Johnson III Co-Executive Editor, BSCT Call for Papers, Special Symposium, Journal of Pubic Affairs Education: IMPEDIMENTS TO THE AMERICAN DREAM; DEMOCRACY AND MEN OF COLOR LIVING IN 21ST UNITED STATES In 1962 Michael Harrington authored a prophetic book entitled The Other America: Poverty in the United States (Scribner Publishing) in which he argued that America is intentionally hiding the fact that poor people are living among the most affluent members of society. Harrington forecasted that this issue would continue without corrective governmental and social policy action. America is still dealing with issues of poverty over fifty years after Harrington’s book was first published. Complicating issues of poverty or working class/urban conditions is often race/ethnicity. This too remains a crippling matter that Harrington addressed in the 1960’s as well. The United States has and continues to have demonstrated challenges in addressing racial matters especially when they are intersected with other variables such as gender and social class. Examples of such challenges include the shooting deaths of three unarmed African American men, namely Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin and most recently Michael Brown. This JPAE symposium, currently scheduled to appear in the Summer 2015 issue, (Vol. 21 no. 3 ), proposes to take up the issues addressed by Harrington, specifically addressing African American and Latino men as they appear to be some of the most at-risk communities within the United States. The symposium seeks proposals that address these issues by also making substantive policy recommendations and how such recommendations may be useful for public affairs education. The proposals must include men of color intersected with another inequitable variable. Proposals may use such variables as education, incarceration, gun violence, stereotypes etc. The editors are also keenly interested in proposals that address the assessment of using social equity as a pedagogical tool/framework for social change. Paper proposals are due December 15, 2014, and should include a working title, a one half to one page description of the proposed content, and organizational affiliation and contact information for the author(s). Papers selected from among the proposals will be invited to participate in the symposium but does not ensure publication. Paper drafts will be due March 1, 2015; papers received after that date cannot be blind reviewed. The guest editor of this symposium is Dr. Richard Greggory Johnson III Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Law & International Business, School of Management, University of San Francisco. Please submit questions and proposals via email to him at [email protected]. Dr. David Schultz is the Editor-in-Chief of JPAE; he is responsible for final decisions.
