Dear family and friends, Tonight I ALMOST killed a cyclist on a busy Street in Ottawa (corner of Bank and Glebe) I did everything right, I signalled my intentions, checked the rear and side mirror, shoulder check and then pulled out....I only saw him at the LAST minute. He had no lights, no reflective clothing, no reflective stickers on his bicycle and not wearing a helmet.( this is NOT a kid/teenager but a guy in his 50s....) He served into on coming traffic to avoid hitting my huge SUV, the driver on the other side of the road had lighting reflexes and hit his brakes on time..the STUPID middle age Caucasian numb-nut, brain dead dipstick cyclist clipped the front headlight of the oncoming car. He managed to stop on time, but the car got reared by another dimwitted lady driver. No one was hurt, and the damage to the rear bumper was minimal. No one wanted to involve the POLICE, who are already too busy with real police work tracking down real criminals. THE REASON I am sharing this scary event is to ask you to please MAKE any member of your friends/family get a light, a bell, a helmet and wear REFLECTIVE clothing...(unless you are planning to end the relationship then encourage them to do the opposite.) He was very fortunate to run into drivers like us who are responsible and careful, like the driver on the other side of the road. Phew, I am still recovering and writing this post to let you pass on my message of SAFETY.
