Defensive Coordinator Kevin Coyle (On how the defensive ends performed against New Orleans) – “I thought for the most part they did a solid job. Derrick (Shelby) has played well all season long, particularly in the run game. He’s a very consistent performer. He does everything that you would ask of, and I thought he more than held his own out there. Dion (Jordan) played close to about 30 snaps in the game. I thought he got some pressure. On one of the sacks he did a good job. He collapsed the pocket and made the quarterback step up in there, which enabled the other guys to get the sack. He had a great play chasing down one of the screen plays there down the sideline. I thought they did a good job overall.” (On his take on Jamar Taylor’s debut) – “It was a typical of a rookie player that went out there, competed hard and did some positive things, I really thought he did. He was a little off in a couple of things, and when you are little bit off the result is usually a completion. I was pleased in the way he responded. He competed. The game wasn’t too big for him. Talking to the guys on the sideline, he was anxious and ready to get back out there. I think it was a tough situation to go into, but I thought it shows well for the future for him.” (On playing Jamar Taylor over Will Davis) –“Because we had made a decision. Will had been up the week before, and we were waiting for Jamar to have a full week of practice, and he showed well during the course of the practice week. We had to make a decision between one of the two as far as the active roster goes. Jamar has some flexibility playing in the nickel, playing in the outside. That was one of the main reasons there.” (On what he said to Jamar Taylor after the Jimmy Graham touchdown where it looked like he played good defense but was at a height disadvantage) – “That and his initial alignment he could have helped himself a little bit. That was the thing I relayed down to the guys on the sideline. He (Graham) is a big guy, and (Taylor) enabled a guy to get outside of him so that he had inside position on him. In that position with such a big guy it is hard to make a play on the ball. If we can get that corrected, he ran with him. He was right in a good position, like you said, but wasn’t really able to elevate to really contest the ball like we would really like him to.” (On how he would grade the state of his pass defense) – “We need to improve. We need to be more productive. We need to be more consistent with everything that we are doing. It’s not just the pass defense. Last night we finally came out and played the run game the way I expect that we will, but yet overall we have to be better in coverage and I’ve got to do a better job. I’ll take as much responsibility as anybody in that I’ve got to get them in better position to make plays, and I didn’t do a good job of that during the course of the game last night.” (On the decision not to play Cam Wake last night) – “You are going to make a decision based on if he, number one, is in a position where he’s going to be effective in the game, and number two, he doesn’t put himself in a position in where if he’s not 100 percent is it’s going to prolong him as far as the injury goes in terms of coming back and being able to play. When we looked at that, it’s a group decision that’s made there between the medical staff and the coaches. We just felt we were better off going with the guys who were 100 percent for the ballgame.” (On if he is optimistic Cam Wake will play this weekend against Baltimore) – “We hope so. I think we are going to have to go through the week and see how he progresses. We went into the game hoping he would feel really good last night, and Cam did everything he could possibly do to get out on the field. He wanted to play. I just mention not just Cam, if you look at the guys, I’m really proud of this group even though we are disappointed in this last game. I’m proud of the fact that (Paul) Soliai has worked the way he has to get himself back ready to play in that game because it’s important to him. The way Koa Misi was banged up a little bit and had to fight all week long to come back, and Jonathan Freeny. Dion (Jordan) has been playing with a shoulder (injury) all year long. The young guys, Jamar Taylor coming back off of injuries. We’ve had a number of guys who have really stepped up. Ellerbe has been banged up with his ribs last week. That’s the way it is in the NFL, don’t get me wrong. I’m not looking for a way to get people to feel sorry for us in any way. This is a group of guys that are totally committed to winning. They showed me that over the last couple of weeks. They are out there practicing. They don’t want to miss a snap. They are doing everything they can to get ready to play.” (On summarizing Dannell Ellerbe’s season) – “He’s a fine player, I think he’s going to get better and better as we keep going through the year. He’s playing in a spot where he played some in college, but he hasn’t had the NFL experience in there, taking charge of everything, making all the calls and doing that. As he becomes more comfortable with that and doesn’t have to worry about making the right call, and setting the front right, making sure we’re in the right coverage check. A little bit of that is still a part of the process with him, hopefully we can continue to accelerate that phase of it because he’s a phenomenal linebacker. He can really run and make plays, he’ll be more active as he becomes more confident in what he’s doing.” (On what happened on a wheel route to Darren Sproles and if he could explain what happened on the play) – “He ran the wheel route, and I think what happened early on in the game, the first series was a nightmare as all of you witnessed. I think part of it was our guys were so geeked up for the game, they were so anxious, that Reshad (Jones) came down hill and was hoping they would run, they run a little option route with him all the time and I think he thought he might have a shot at jumping underneath it and making a play and he didn’t obviously. We had a little stack situation a play or two later where the guy ran underneath we kind of guessed wrong for a second and ‘boom’ the guy is wide open over the middle of the field and he’s running. I’ll give them some credit, they schemed us pretty good early in the game with a couple of things, they’ve got a good coaching staff and some fine players, so what I’ve told you before it’s got to come back to me, I’ve got to do a better job of helping these guys doing the course of the game. The first play I think was just an overreaction because we were so excited, it wasn’t that we weren’t ready to play, we might have been a little too excited in the very beginning of the game.” (On if he would have treated Darren Sproles any different schematically) – “No, we tried, I guess. Honestly we had ways. If you go back and look at the tape closely, there were times we were doubling him. We had two guys on him. We had him bracketed at times, but you can’t do it every play. You try to know what they are going to do, but sometimes they do things that you were particularly anticipating in that down or distance. You look at all the balls he caught, they weren’t down the field throws. They were short stuff. About half of them were in the backfield whether it be a screen or a flair pass. He’s extremely dangerous when he catches the ball out that way. You know we had things in the gameplan. Some things you hit on it, and obviously sometimes we didn’t.” (On what happened to his hand) - “No. I had surgery in the offseason, and I had some tendon issues. It hadn’t responded well, so I had to go back last week. They did another little procedure on it.” (On allowing five 100 yard receivers and what he can do about it) - “It’s everything. I think we are looking at it real closely right now. It’s matchups. It’s coverages. It’s the pass rush. It’s calls I might make that they weren’t a good offensive play against. It’s a combination of things, and hopefully we can get it corrected.”
