Defensive alignment: something that came up today was some basic rules for defensive systems. So here we go. Obviously the opposition have the ball!! 1 Fly half STAYS OUT of rucks if possible if he gets sucked in then its an immediate overlap for them out wide. To counter- our BACK ROWERS or SCRUM HALF must ignore the ruck and race out to stop the overlap. Other forwards must defend round the ruck. 2 If an overlap is created the wing STAYS OUT marking his opposite number. If he goes in then its one on one vs our full back. By staying out the wing forces the break further infield where its easier to defend. Wing only goes for the tackle as a last resort (so if they are about to score). 3 We wait our moment to challenge for the ball- when we have two or more forwards making a tackle and we have them isolated otherwise we FAN OUT. So thats it, it takes a lot of discipline to stay out of rucks and tackles leaving the job to the rest of the team, but if you dont the best sides will pass around you. Our tackling is pretty good and its only the best sides that expose us by driving into midfield and then going wide. Very few games left now hope you can make them. Dave
