Dementia patients share a deficit in their ability to recognize - TopicsExpress

Dementia patients share a deficit in their ability to recognize facial expressions, as well as familiar people, places, and objects. This deficiency can terrify a loved one (and no doubt the caregiver, as well). By 2001, my husband no longer recognized people who were not in his life on a daily basis, including family members. I purchased a blank picture book and included labeled photographs of relatives and close friends. We spent time looking at these, as well as creating scrapbooks that attempted to preserve any of Red’s remaining memories. I can’t say it helped much other than to pacify me. Over time, I learned to live with being called “Honey, Honey,” “Hey, lady,” and, “Mom.” He had long forgotten my name.
