Democratic Alliance Press Statement by Desiree van der Walt DA Limpopo Education Spokesperson DA finds thousands of undelivered textbooks During a routine oversight visit this morning, a DA delegation discovered thousands of undelivered textbooks in the teacher training college in Fetakgomo. Security barred us from completing the oversight process. But the photographs (photo 1, photo 2, photo 3, photo 4) we were able to take prove that thousands of textbooks remain undelivered. This is shocking given that schools have had to drag the Limpopo Education Department to court to get books delivered. Why must schools go to court to get textbooks when there are thousands lying around in warehouses? It boggles the mind. We challenge the Education MEC’s office to provide answers on this warehouse immediately. - Which textbooks are in this warehouse? - How many are at the Fetakgomo warehouse? - Why have they not been delivered? The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has denied that there is a problem with textbooks in the province. It is becoming clear that the DBE is misleading South Africans. There is an ongoing court case. We have identified at least 47 schools without all the textbooks they need. And now we are discovering warehouses still filled with undelivered textbooks. The Education department must explain what is going on here. They have been misleading South Africans for years. They are jeopardising the future of our children by denying the scale of the problem. We need to make sure our children have textbooks, so that they can get the education they deserve.
