Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is a form of contraception in which a progestin hormone is given by injection every three months. DMPA may be associated with an increased risk of blood clots in veins (venous thromboembolism, VTE), although how great the risk may be is not well understood. A study found that women with VTE were twice as likely to have used DMPA than women without VTE, although the actual VTE risk for women using DMPA could still be low. This new information does not change our opinion that DMPA remains an acceptable form of contraception for women with a history of VTE.
