Deputy First Selectwoman: Seymour On The Right Track BY Nicole Klarides-Ditria | Guest Column | OCT 28, 2013 11:10 AM (0) | Log in to Post a Comment | Send link to a friend | E-mail the Author POSTED TO: Seymour, Guest Column, Seymour Election FILE Seymour Deputy First Selectwoman Nicole Klarides-Ditria and First Selectman Kurt Miller. Throughout my life, involvement in the community and civic service has been guiding principles for the Klarides Family. I was born and raised in Seymour and I have always tried to give back to the community that has given so much to me. My family and I have owned and managed small businesses and properties throughout the area. This has given me a wealth of experience in fiscal responsibility and proper management practices. I have also served in various volunteer positions over the years. At Quinnipiac University, my alma mater, I served on the Board of Governors. In Seymour, I have served at the Seymour Animal Shelter, the Building Review Committee, and one term on the Board of Selectmen as Deputy First Selectwoman. My family lives here — I work as head trainer for Seymour High School’s football team and head trainer for the Academy of Our Lady of Mercy, Lauralton Hall, sports program. My husband is a Detective in the Seymour Police Department and my son attends Seymour Middle School. I have a vested interest in ensuring we constantly work towards a better Seymour. In the past two years the Board of Selectmen, under the leadership of First Selectman W. Kurt Miller and the Republican majority, has done just that. In terms of economic development, the Housatonic Wire property, left in disarray after a September 2010 fire by the previous administration, has been cleaned up and we are working directly with the owner to attract developers. The old Sweets & Eats property off Exit 22 has been sold and demolished and a new gas station and convenience store is already under construction. The tax incentive plan we commissioned is already attracting great businesses, such as Grand Light and Clean Harbors. The long-stalled Tingue Dam Bypass project is finally underway and when complete in 2014, will be a beautiful addition to an ever-improving downtown area. Seymour is finally operating with the efficiency of a business. The Republican ticket has used our combined experience in business ownership and management to plan for the future, creating capital improvement and road repair funds so that the money for large expenditures doesn’t remain a never-ending series of fiscal emergencies. We have also created a human resources department and instituted an employee handbook and employee performance appraisals to keep your government accountable. The Republican candidates for the Board of Selectman have worked hard to make Seymour a better place to live, work and visit over the past two years. We are seeking your support to continue this trend and finish what we started.
