Did you know...frogs and toads are basically the same, and some species fit both categories. Toads generally have short back legs and frogs long ones. Toads have dryer bumpy skin and frogs slimy smooth skin. The first fossils of these animals are from 190 million years ago ( late Jurassic period). The skeletal shape has virtually remained unchanged. No one knows the exact life span of these animals in the wild, but have been recorded to live 40 years in captivity. The largest frog is about 30 cm , the largest toad is 23 cm but can be bigger. They are found on every continent except Antarctica. Toads can live far from water , but frogs generally can not. Toads have to blink in order to swallow their food. They can freeze their bodies solid and thaw out, with no problem. Toads and frogs in an environment is considered to be a sign of a healthy Eco system (environmentally and biologically). Both can absorb water and oxygen through its skin. The circles behind their eyes are the ears(which are connected to the lungs). The pupils can be round like ours, vertical like a cats, horizontal , or even heart shaped. The longest recorded jump was over 33 feet. The smallest frog is 9.8mm. The frog and toad population world wide is in decline. Some species can change colour, there is even one frog that has stripes on its legs that flash. Toads and frogs call out for, mating, danger, and weather about to change. I had to swerve on the road like five times tonight on the way to the rig so not to hit the frogs...lol. There I did my part, now go kiss a toad....they rock!
