Discipleship Series; 12 September, 2013 (NKJV) Exodus 20:4, "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. What are the consequences of the second of the Decalogue? Today, we shall consider the first consequence; Exodus 20:5, you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me. God considers the act of having another God as an act of opposition and hatred towards Him, which is really scary! Apostle Paul echoed this concern for us in 1 Corinthians 10:22, Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? This is further exacerbated in Hebrews 10:31, It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Idolatry is a sin that exceeds the offender but extends to generations after the offender. God describes Himself as ‘jealous’ when it comes to the issue of idolatry. Take a look at what the Bible says about jealousy; Songs of Solomon 8:6, … jealousy is cruel as the grave… So, idolatry brings with the consequences associated with jealousy, which is death and offshoot of sin for about third and fourth generations. Many have direct fathers and grandfathers (parents) who were idol worshippers…, for those whose god is self – same consequence applies. But I will not want anyone to lose sleep till we consider the second consequence of the second Decalogue. Prayer: Merciful God! Forgive me and my fathers of every sin of idolatry, in Jesus’ name.
