Disclaimer: this is a long one! I recently read a Facebook post that rather bothered me concerning ladies (this includes men too!) and makeup. Working in the cosmetic industry is a tough thing for me. For years Ive struggled with finding beauty in myself, wishing more than anything to look in the mirror bare-faced and see a pretty girl. Whats even harder is seeing and hearing others slander those of us who wear makeup - saying we are too afraid to show our faces, that young women should embrace what they were given and not to cake on the makeup. Here is my defense, and perhaps another girl out there will read this and find solace: I do not wear makeup to change who I am. I accept me for me, with my piggy pink face and lack of eyebrows, white eyelashes and dark circles. But the face that I choose to show the world is the face that expresses my art form. My art is makeup. My art is making women feel beautiful when they cant see it themselves. My art is making my eyebrows match to look like sisters rather than deranged third cousins. I dont color my hair, I havent had plastic surgery, and Im not interested in changing who I am for anyone. But makeup expresses who I am better than anything else. I am colorful, always changing, sometimes flawless and sometimes very flawed, and most importantly, I am a woman who knows who she is without the validation or reprimands of others. Thats what makeup is for me. It isnt about hiding - its about being brave enough to express individuality in a way no one else can. I hope that sheds some light on an issue that we need to be more careful about - makeup isnt hiding. Its art, just as painting and tattooing are, and we shouldnt pass harsh judgment on someone because they want to even out their skin tone and look human - for that person, it may just be who they truly are.
