“Do not accumulate for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But accumulate for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. [Matthew 6:19-21, NET Bible] This takes us to another of those subjects that I think Americans struggle with more than other countries of the world. To borrow from a famous phrase from a childrens cereal commercial, were Coo-coo for insurance. We will insure anything. A very close second, and similar in nature, are our pension and retirement funds. Even our government calls Social Security insurance. Its not that any of that is bad. In fact, much of it is based on sound principles of financial planning. However, the danger is that we come to depend more on the supposed peace provided by those insurance plans than we do on Gods peace. Recent experience, however, has shown that there is no guarantee that those insurance plans will actually be there when we need them. Companies go out of business. Policies get cancelled without notice or explanation. Benefits get cut. People find themselves with nothing and no place to go. They are completely unprepared because they based everything on those plans being there when they needed them. Jesus is NOT telling us to take a vow of poverty, nor is He telling us to sit on our hands and not make plans for when we may need the extra help. What He IS telling us is to remember that these things are not God and they can, and will, disappoint us. Our eyes and our hearts must remain fixed on God. He will never disappoint us even though everyone and everything else will.
