Do the best for your breasts Health authorities are hoping recent media coverage of breast cancer screening on the Today Show will prompt Queensland women to have a regular two-yearly breast screen and be breast aware. BreastScreen Queensland (BSQ) State Radiologist Dr Janet Gray said recent media coverage of high profile cases served as a timely reminder of the importance of participating in breast cancer screening and maintaining good breast health. “Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting Queensland women and the second biggest cause of cancer deaths,” Dr Gray said. “While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. Nine out of ten women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease which is why women need to have regular breast screens,” Dr Gray said. “The success of BSQ in performing more than three million mammograms and detecting more than 13,000 breast cancers is having a direct effect on the declining death rate and improvements in survival over the last 20 years but there was still a long way to go.” Women aged 50 to 74 years are strongly recommended to have a free breast screen every two years, and women aged 40–49 and those over 75 are also eligible to attend. Phone 13 20 50 to book a free breastscreen now or visit breastscreen.qld.gov.au to find out more.
