Dont let this happen to you: dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2159749/Bride-groom-left-snaps-wedding-day-photographer-lost-memory-card-boozy-brawl-couple-claim-said-sorry.html Here are some warning signs to look for when booking your photographer. Individually each may be OK - but taken together, they should set alarm bells ringing: Price The photographer’s quoted price is much lower than quotes from other photographers. Wedding Photography may seem expensive but you are paying for sole use of a professional, their skill and services to capture your wedding memories. It’s not just the 8hrs or so during your wedding day of course, there is the time taken in pre-wedding consultations, wedding rehearsals and of course editing and re-touching your photos afterwards which often take twice as much time again. The of course there are all the usual business expenses that have to come from somewhere. In short if the price seems very low, corners are being cut. You get what you pay for. Web Site Check that the photographer as a bona-fide web site with a .co.uk or suffix, not just a Facebook page or a Weebly Wix, Moonfriut or similar free site without a proper domain name. Email Address Most genuine photographers will have a company related email address. Beware if the photographers email address is from a service provider such as btinternet, sky or talktalk or is from a free provider such as hotmail or gmail. Reviews Check Facebook, Google and Thompson Local for reviews of the photographers work and feedback from past clients. The odd bad comment can be from a rival photographer, the odd high praise comment may be self-posted so don’t pay much attention to the odd very good or for that matter the odd very bad review, look at that the majority of people are saying. The more reviews a photographer has the better the overall impression you can get. Contact Information Does the photographer publish a postal address and a landline telephone? If not ask yourself why not. What is the photographer trying to hide? Are contact details kept vague to deceive the taxman or to prevent contact by disgruntled customers perhaps? Bank Account If you pay be cheque does the photographer ask you to make it payable to them personally or to a company. Cheques made payable to individuals may be an indication that the photographer is not operating as a genuine business. Insurance Is the photographer insured? Don’t just take their word for it ask to see proof of both public liability and professional indemnity insurance. Many venues insist that photographers have public liability insurance and won’t allow the photographer to operate without it. It’s also in your own interests, for example, if someone was to trip over the photographers tripod, or if the photographer was to knock over a valuable vase, as the person that employed the photographer you could find yourself liable. Professional indemnity insurance makes sure that you are compensated if for example by negligence on the part of the photographer your photographs are lost. Not having insurance is one way unscrupulous photographers cut costs. Professional Organisation Is the photographer a member of a professional organisation? Being a member of a professional body such as the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers or the Guild of Photographers is not only an indication of the photographers commitment to professional standards but such bodies often review the photographers work to make sure it’s of an acceptable standard and in the event of any problems can act as in independent mediator. Equipment Ask the photographer what equipment they use, most professionals will use Canon, Nikon or Sony. It’s not so much the brand of equipment that matters, but it should be of a professional specification, normally full frame, with high quality professional lenses and capable of operating in inclement weather and in low light. You also need to be sure that the photographer has at least two camera bodies and a selection of lenses, not only to make sure that the have the equipment to get the best shots, but also to make sure they have a spare in the event of equipment failure.
