Dugongs are one of the Worlds most endangered Marine mammals, and illegal fishing is threatening their survival. East Africas last viable Dugong population is found in Mozambiques Bazaruto Archipelago National Park- estimated at no more than 250 animals. Karen Allen runs the EWT Dugong Emergency Protection Project, and works alongside the Parks 28-strong, all-male team of Law Enforcement Officers in order to curb Dugong mortality and to capacitate the Authorities to apply effective conservation interventions. For the past 3 years, Karen has been based on Benguerra island, and has managed to lower the Dugong mortality rate significantly. Through a Support Partnership with EWT, the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park now applies the most effective law enforcement system within Mozambique’s five Marine Protected Areas. Our close collaboration has improved law enforcement success, developed the Enforcement Officers’ skills and has nurtured the Park’s future leaders. The targeted programmes we have helped establish means the Park can now measure its protection efforts – in the last 13 months, only one known Dugong death has occurred, 10 illegal gill nets have been confiscated and destroyed, and in 2014 so far- over 15,000Km of Marine Patrols have been performed.
