During his lifetime and career Mark Goddard has acted in many roles and provided numerous fine performances. In one such performance he played LAPD Officer Tom Porter in an episode of Adam-12 titled Elegy for a Pig which originally aired on November 21, 1970. This role was a bit unusual as not one word was uttered by Mr. Goddard. His performance was great and the message conveyed was powerful. I hadnt seen this episode of Adam-12, which was one of my favorite shows along with Dragnet, for many years. I did a search for it, found it on Hulu and thought I would share it here. If you havent ever seen it or it has been a long time then it is well worth watching. As a deputy sheriff, and member of the sheriffs department honor guard, several scenes in the show brought back some strong memories and emotions. The very first officer funeral I attended was for a friend of mine who I had gone to rookie school with and was killed 22 SEP 1987, just six months after graduation, while assisting another agency who was in pursuit of a stolen van. My friend was hit head on by the driver and died very shortly after. The driver survived was convicted and, due to his lengthy criminal history, sentenced to life in prison with no parole. While in rookie school I was one of the older recruits and he was a bit overweight so we worked hard together to help each other get through the physical training part of our basic law enforcement training. I was totally unprepared as to what to expect at his service and it was all I could do to hold it together when the department did a helicopter fly over and a radio call out announcing Officer (name withheld) is 10-7 (Out of service). A sad side note to this came six months later when my friends younger sister, who suffered from severe down syndrome, died of a broken heart because her brother never came home.
