ECN releases GRV figures Edson Haufiku A grand total of 1 162 366 Namibians registered during the third General Registration of Voters (GRV) process from 15 January to 2 March. Of this figure 1 158 925 were registered within the borders of Namibia, with 3 441 registered at the country’s various foreign missions. This was announced by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) chairperson, Advocate Notemba Tjipueja at the commission’s headquarters an hour ago. She said, the GRV exercise was a mammoth national task that entailed 699 ECN registration teams (175 fixed, 382 semi-fixed and 142 mobile) comprising of 3,866 registration officials manning 3, 852 registration points across the country. From the grand total of registered voters, 1747 people were detected through finger prints to have registered twice. 188 855 people registered through sworn statements. A mechanism introduced to afford those without relevant documentation the opportunity to partake in the democratic process. 106, 313 people registered through the sworn statement in respect of citizenship, while the registered youth make up 44% (508,459) of the total number of registered voters. “The so-called generation Y, which includes ‘born frees clearly shows that the youth have come on board and are seriously taking part in the affiars of the nation” Tjipueja said. According to the chairperson, the final voter’s register will be available for inspections and objections as of 3 to 15 April, before it is gazetted on 27 May. In terms of the Section 15 of the Electoral Act, Act 24 of 1992 provides for the conduct of a GRV at intervals of 10 years. The first GRV took place in 1992 and was followed by the second GRV in 2003
