EDITORIAL OPINION BY COMMUNITY OF INTEREST NIGERIA 8 September 2014 EMOTIONS APART! In a true democracy every candidate must be given a chance to make his or her case before the electorate without intimidation. The electorate has the ultimate respondibility to judge and choose the person they prefer to be their leader by their ballot on a free and fare election of the people. Presuming such to be the case in Nigeria (though we do not claim this), then to use intimidation to try to silence a candidate even if it is the case that the candidate may not be acceptable to the officials, is no different from what Boko Haram is doing in the North Eastern part of Nigeria, to the chagrin of the peace loving Moslems and Christians of the world. The governnent and the people of Nigeria should not tolerate such act of political hooliganism in their budding democracy. To make it worse, for a sitting Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to allege to have been waylaid by presumed political intimidators is a case that cannot be ignored by any official of the country. To make it even worse, the alleged intimidation victim is a female Senator. Would these alleged attackers have done the same to a male Senator without meeting their waterloo? One wonders what type of protection is being afforded by the government of Nigeria and the government of Abia state whose constituents this Senator is representing to its elected officials! We are calling on His Excellency, President Jonathan, His Excellency Chief T.A. Orji, the Executive Governor of Abia State, and all law enforcement personnel in Nigeria to urgently investigate these sad incidence and bring the alleged perpetrators to account by the laws of Nigeria. Should the story told by the Senator be found to be concucted, we would also call on the Upper Chamber of the Nigerian Legislators to repremand and possibly sanction their colleague as appropriate. We hereby also call on the Nigerian Senate to investigate and ensure that justice is served when one of their members is so disrespected as reported by Senator Nkechi Nwaorgu.
