EVEN AT CRICKET, ITS ALL ABOUT DEMBARE FOR quite a prolonged period yesterday, Dynamos featured prominently on SuperSport’s live coverage of the opening day of the first cricket Test between Zimbabwe and Pakistan at Harare Sports Club. A surprise, isn’t it, that a football club would see itself being the subject of a panel discussion, which went on for quite a sustained period, between top two cricket commentators engrossed in a fascinating first day of a Test match? Certainly not when that club is Dynamos and its tentacles can be felt just about everywhere in this country’s sporting landscape. It all started with Pommie Mbangwa talking about Zimbabwe seamer, Shingi Masakadza’s athleticism, and saying that he used to be a professional football player for Dynamos “one of the biggest clubs here in Zimbabwe.” All good, until his compatriot, Dirk Viljoen, intervenes and clarifies the statement by saying that Dynamos is “the biggest football team in Zimbabwe.” Then Pommie shoots back: “I can tell you it’s the biggest football club in Harare.” Getting quite interesting, isn’t it, and Viljoen is not one to give in easily, especially here where he feels that he is the one who could be right. And he decides to go with a light-hearted attack on Mbangwa being influenced in his analysis by his hometown. “Bulawayo boy supporting Highlanders,” Viljoen goes on. But Mbangwa feels he is right and is also not ready to give his mate this little victory and counters with his old line: “one of the biggest (clubs).” Viljoen tries to find comfort in Google and technology telling his partner that “modern technology will allow you Pommie to just Google which is the biggest football club in Zimbabwe, just put that in your search engine.” The talk moves from the club to Masakadza and one of them says “I’m not sure how good he was (as a footballer) but from what I heard, he was a serious talent.” Well, if you feel the DeMbare question is gone, and the focus has shifted on the athlete, the cricketer who could have been a good footballer, then you are wrong. Mbangwa believes he still has a point to make about Dynamos being “one of the biggest clubs” in this country. “No, I was never gonna agree with you (that the Glamour Boys are the biggest club). I’m still not agreeing with you,” he says. Viljoen feels, for the first time, that he is losing this battle and looks elsewhere for arsenal. “They have more titles here in Zimbabwe,” he reminds his pal hoping that will make him drive his point that they are the biggest football club in this country. But Mbangwa is adamant that he is still right and hits back: “I’m not here just to (confirm) statements that aren’t true and say that they are (the biggest club). It’s misleading people, one statement that is true is that Shingi Masakadza has bowled well today.” Well, Dynamos are playing a league match today and, while this game is not live on SuperSport, there is no guarantee that their name will not feature in the cricket commentary on day two at Harare Sports Club.
