Each year at about this time some nice woman will approach me and say, I loved your Mothers Day column. At first this perplexed me; it had been some time since Id actually written a Mothers Day column. But eventually I realized that, through the everyday miracle of the Internet, a column that Id written for Newsweek entitled Goodbye Dr. Spock kept making the rounds to commemorate the day. I rarely re-read my own work, and, despite the rubric of my Newsweek column, I almost never feel that Ive produced The Last Word on anything. But every once in a great while I look at something and think, well, I cant do any better than that. This is one of those times and so, instead of trying to write something new for Mothers Day, I pass this along with my best wishes for all of you getting handmade crayon cards and picture frames made from popsicle sticks.
