Each year, the Media, Diversity, & Social Change Initiative at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism releases the largest and most comprehensive report on gender inequality in film. Here are some results from the 2013 report (available at link below): •Across 4,506 speaking characters evaluated, 29.2% were female and 70.8% were male. •36% of characters in comedy films in 2013 were female. This percentage is consistent across comedy films in 2007, 2010, and 2013. •Females represent less than a quarter of all characters in action/adventure films and less than a third in animated films. Though these percentages fluctuate over the three years we studied, they remain consistently lower than both comedy films and the percentage of females in the population.
