Earlier today, I attended a Clarinet Recital with a capacity audience given by Mark Walton with accompanist David Miller (Piano) and a guest appearance by Ann Beilby (Viola) for a duo by Gordon Jacob. The recital carried the title Hidden Clarinet Treasures from England and was given at the Princess Alexandra Hall, Mayfair, London. The works were Universally well-received by an audience consisting of many professional and some aspiring musicians. Composers represented were Sid Phillips, Paul Harvey, Colin Cowles, Alison Beckett, Mike Cornick, Gordon Jacob, Jonathan FeBland, Christopher Norton, Paul Harris, Joseph Horovitz and James Rae. The styles of the music ranged from moderately serious to more lightweight work with elements of Jazz here and there. Some of the works had truly virtuosic Clarinet parts, but Mark seemed to deal with these almost effortlessly. He was gamely supported throughout by his fine accompanist, David Miller. *****
